Meeting Aesclepius

The exercise this week was more of a visualization technique, and we had to picture a figure and transform them into a couple different characters. I particularly didn't like the exercise because I don't think that I have that much of a creative mind. I understand that the exercise was to increase my psychological and spiritual wellness, but this particular exercise wasn't that beneficial for me. I liked the exercises that were focused on relaxing the mind. I will continue to practice the techniques in the exercise, so I can foster greater health and wellness.

The saying, "One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself" means to me, when you haven't experienced a certain situation that you can't tell someone how it will feel. For example, if you have never experienced having someone close to you die, then you can't tell someone who has lost a loved one how they are going to feel. You can sympathize with that person, and everyone will interpret things differently. As a health and wellness professional it is important to understand many situations and be able to accept the reactions and emotions of others.

  1. Hi Mike!

I agree with you that in order for someone to be able to explain how something feels or how something works, you must experience it first for yourself. It's like trying to teach someone how to bake a cake and you've never done it before; that just won't work! Sometimes we feel this way in the health profession wondering at a doctors visit "well, how can you be sure that this will work when you never had this issue before yourself?" Experience is important and we are obligated to gain these experiences so that we can share them if we choose to preach them.

  2. Hi Mike,

I agree with you that the exercise this week was not beneficial for myself either. I was trying to imagine kindest most loving person I could imagine and that person was mother Teresa. I was able to imagine her, but not imagine what she would say to me. I found this exercise very difficult and I also think the relaxing exercise was much more beneficial for myself.

I also think the statement “one cannot lead another where one has not gone himself” is about experiencing is much stronger than reading and talking about. It would be like a doctor who smokes to tell you to quit smoking. I prefer the “practice what you preach” approach.

  3. Hi Mike

Great blog! I agree, you cannot tell someone without experiencing it yourself. This topic in itself is very interesting it to me because my son's father was in Iraq for a few years and this was the topic at hand. I would try and understand but he would always say if you never served time in Iraq and experienced the things I experienced how could you understand and tell me anything about it. I was at lost for words because he was right and I felt so so bad.
